This last weekend of May 2019 the citizens of United States celebrate and remember Memorial Day, it is for remembering and honoring people who died while bravely fighting for our freedoms and serving in the United States Armed Forces.
In the Old Testament and throughout human history, people of all cultures have sought freedom. A very instrumental prophet, teacher, lawgiver and leader in the Old Testament was Moses. He’s credited with writing the Torah and with leading the Israelites out of Egypt and across the Red Sea. Moses delivered the Israelite people from slavery in Egypt to freedom as a nation of Israel. After 40 years of wandering in the desert, Moses died within sight of the Promised Land on Mount Nebo. During those 40 years of freedom experienced by the Israelites after being in slavery for hundreds of years, possibly 430 years, there were many abuses of freedom. Freedom does not mean that we should break rules and laws, and commit sins.
As a Christian we are called to be free from sin. Freedom from sin is what it means to follow Christ. In Romans 5:12, “Just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned.” Adam and Eve became the first lawbreakers when they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and this led to the fall of man. Adam and Eve brought sin and death to all who came after, however, Jesus paid for our sin, making it possible for all who believe to reign with Him in eternal life. We strive for a life of freedoms and also a life free of sin. Seek for yourself a life free of sin through a deeper relationship with God, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Thank you to our Almighty Jesus for dying on the cross so we can all be free!
